Hunting of the Red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) in Thailand’s 40+ non-hunting areas is now prohibited under an edict issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, which came into effect today following its publication in the Royal Gazette.
Hunting of the bird is, however, still permitted in areas where no restrictions on hunting apply.
Red-whiskered bulbul was removed from Thailand’s list of protected wildlife species last December by the Wildlife Conservation and Protection Committee. The announcement said that the delisting may affect the species and, hence, it is deemed necessary to ban hunting of the species in the country’s non-hunting areas.
Among the 40+ non-hunting grounds are Bueng Boraphet, Thalay Noi, Bang Phra Reservoir, Doi Suthep, Wat Tarn Aen, Wat Phai Lom, Wat Ampuwararam, Phu Khao Fai Kradong, Wat Tham Rakang, Pa Krad, Bueng Chawak, Khao Yai, Khaso Ta Phrom, Laem Talumpuk, Khao Pratap Chang, Tham Chao Ram, Lam Nang Rong, Bueng Lahan, Song Kwae, Pak Thong Chai, Bang Yang, Mae Mai, Tap Salao-Huai Rabum and Si Sawat.
