The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) has launched an investigation into suspected space debris washed ashore on Bamboo Island in Krabi province.
Officials from GISTDA’s Space Technology Research Center (S-TREC) inspected and took custody of the object on Thursday from staff at the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Park rangers initially found the debris floating near Protection Unit 3 on November 1.
S-TREC director Dr. Sittiporn Channumsin met with Capt. Somkiat Songsawat, deputy director of the Krabi Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre, and assistant park chief Warawit Chitrua to review technical tracking data, safety protocols, and maritime security measures.
GISTDA has transported the object to its 'Space Inspirium' in Chon Buri for detailed engineering analysis to determine its origin.
Authorities advised the public not to touch or move any suspected space debris due to potential toxic chemical hazards, urging anyone who spots similar items to photograph the object, record the location, and notify officials immediately.
