Blue has proved to be the wrong colour choice for motorcycle taxi riders in Pattaya, as Chon Buri authorities, following days of public criticism, have decided to scrap a plan to replace the familiar orange jackets with dark blue ones.

The colour change drew criticism over whether it was politically motivated, as dark blue is associated with the ruling Bhumjaithai party led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Photos of motorcycle taxi riders wearing dark blue jackets, instead of their usual orange ones, went viral on social media, prompting ridicule and taunting by netizens.

Supporters of the change claimed, however, that blue represents Pattaya’s sea and sky.

Opponents, on the other hand, argue that dark blue jackets were less visible than the reflective orange ones, raising concerns about rider and passenger safety, especially at night.

Some motorcycle taxi riders also claimed that they had got fewer customers after switching to the new jackets.

In response, Chon Buri Governor Naris Niramaiwong has revoked an order requiring motorcycle taxi riders in Pattaya and Bang Lamung district to wear dark blue jackets, signing the cancellation today.

The latest order said the colour change could impose unnecessary costs on riders, who would have to purchase new vests and related equipment.

Public motorcycle taxi riders in Bang Lamung district must now return to complying with the general regulations and requirements of the Department of Land Transport by returning to wearing orange jackets.
