Myanmar’s ambassador to Thailand, Zaw Zaw Soe, was recalled yesterday, reportedly for questioning the transport of migrant workers into Thailand and his issuance of visas to anti-government figures.
According to Myanmar’s media, quoting an informed source in the Foreign Ministry of Myanmar, Zaw Zaw Soe was recalled to Nay Pyi Taw to be questioned over allegations that he conspired with Myanmar businessmen in Thailand in the trafficking of migrant workers from Myanmar through Kawthaung, which is opposite Thailand’s Ranong province, and that he issued visas to anti-government groups.
The recall follows the visit to Thailand of Myanmar’s President Min Aung Hlaing and the country’s commander-in-chief Gen. Ye Win Oo in August.
The same media report said that five days before his recall, Zaw Zaw Soe met with Thai Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat for a discussion about data related to Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand and the establishment of official channels for money transfers back to Myanmar.
