The Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) has reports that more than 35 million logins were recorded on its “Plookganja” application for cannabis and hemp cultivation registration between June 9th and 7am today (Monday), amid a cannabis boom following Thailand’s decriminalisation of the two plants last Thursday.
713,544 electronic certificates to grow cannabis have been issued after 735,932 registrations were made, while 22,388 certificates were also issued electronically for the growing of hemp.
Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thira Woratanarat, a medical science lecturer at Chulalongkorn University, has expressed serious concern over the health risks of uncontrolled use of cannabis, especially as an ingredient in food and drinks, which could lead to a host of problems, including accidents, violence and self-harm.
In his Facebook post today, he cited an American medical journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), dated July 24th, 2015, about the case of a 19-year-old American who jumped to his death from the 4th floor of a building in Colorado after having eaten some cookies containing cannabis.
According to the local police, the youth ate a piece of cannabis cookie given to him by a friend. He asked for more and, after about two hours, he started speaking incoherently and became aggressive, eventually jumping to his death. The autopsy showed a significant amount of THC compound in his blood system, said Dr. Thira.
Last week, Thailand’s Royal College of Paediatricians and Child Health also voiced concern on Thai youth over the short and long-term effects of cannabis in food and drinks.
