WeVo guard leader, Piyarat “Toto” Chongthep, was booked by Prachachon police immediately after the Criminal Court granted him bail on Friday afternoon.
Piyarat was arrested on March 6th, along with several other WeVo guards, in the car park of Major Ratchayothin mall, by Pahonyothin police. Police found several bullet-proof vests, slingshots and steel and glass pellets in their vehicle.
In granting bail to Piyarat, the court said that an investigation into the case had progressed to the extent that the charge of illegal assembly in public was clearly substantiated.
Since the charge carries only light penalties, the court decided to set him free on 45,000 baht bail, on the condition that he must not carry firearms in public and must refrain from assaulting the police during protests.
Noraseth Nanongtoom, a lawyer from the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights centre, told the media that he will try to find out, from Prachachon police, why Piyarat was booked again and on what charges.
After Toto’s arrest, other WeVo guards, and followers of the anti-establishment Ratsadon group, went to Prachachuen police station to offer him moral support, while anti-riot police were deployed to ensure peace and order.
