Thailand’s Senate overwhelmingly voted in favour of the executive decree to transfer some army units and budget to the Royal Security Command, which is tasked with providing security to the Royal Family.
223 senators voted in favour, with three abstentions. The decree will be returned to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to be presented to His Majesty the King for royal approval.
On Thursday, the House of Representatives had passed the decree by 376 to 70. Most Future Forward MPs voted against, but Future Forward it. She also recently voted in favour of the Government’s budget bill.
The head of Future Forward’s working committee, Mr Theppitak Malasri, today called on Ms Kavinnart to quit as an MP, accusing her of breaking the promise she made to her constituents. The dissident MP was not available for comment.
All other Opposition MPs, with the exception of the 70 Future Forward members, voted in favour of the decree.
Future Forward secretary-general Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, the only MP who spoke against the decree, contended that the Government had failed to explain why the transfer of the troops and budget to the Royal Security Command was so urgent that it warranted the issuance of an executive decree, albeit that the security for the Royal Family is an important matter.
