Future Forward party leader Thanathorn Juangroongkit’s promising political career came to a sudden halt today when the Constitutional Court suspended his role as a member of parliament pending a final ruling on his fate over his alleged share ownership in a media company.
The court voted 8:1 to suspend the political rising star from performing his duties as an MP, as recommended by the Election Commission, for a period of 60 days as mandated by law. During that time, the court will be determining whether he will be disqualified for allegedly owning shares in V Luck Media Company at the time he registered his election candidacy in violation of the MP Election Act.
The Constitutional Court voted 9:0 to accept the Election Commission’s petition for the court to consider invalidating Thanathorn’s electoral candidacy over his alleged violation of the election law.
Thanathorn will be officially notified of the court’s decision and he must submit his defense to the court within 15 days.
The media share ownership case was initiated with the Election Commission’s Office by political activist Srisuwan Janya.
The Constitutional Court’s orders are a devastating blow to Thanathorn and his party. There remain several other cases, pending with the EC against Thanathorn, including his 110 million baht loan to the party during the pre-election period.
Thanathorn has scheduled a Press conference at 7pm.
