Wild Himalayan cherry trees cast a spell across Thailand’s northern mountains

From January to February, Thailand’s northern mountains, both grand and modest, don a festive shawl of cherry blossoms. Known locally as “Nang Phaya Suea Khrong” and Thai Sakura, the Wild Himalayan Cherry metamorphoses the mountainous landscapes into a breathtaking spectacle.

Unfurling their delicate petals, the trees are adorned in vibrant shades of pink, creating a mesmerizing display against the lush greenery. Each petal, a testament to nature’s artistry, delicately pirouettes in the breeze, crafting a dreamlike atmosphere.

For those seeking a visual feast of cherry blossoms without the need to venture beyond Thailand, the northern region promises an enchanting experience. These locales, rich in natural beauty and cultural charm, promise an immersion into the transient allure of the Wild Himalayan Cherry.

CHIANG RAI

Tranquil Chiang Rai province offers a journey of discovery through enchanting landscapes during late winter. Just 60 kilometres north of downtown Chiang Rai, Doi Mae Salong hill station features a scenic terraced tea plantation and exquisite Chinese cuisine. From January to February, the Wild Himalayan Cherry bursts into full bloom, forming a captivating pink tunnel. Beyond well-known destinations like Doi Mae Salong, Pha Tang in Wiang Kaen District presents a unique and immersive experience.

Perched atop a hill, Pha Tang provides a panoramic view of undulating hills blanketed in pink and white hues. The air is infused with the delicate fragrance of cherry blossoms as visitors stroll along flower-lined trails. The serenity of this hidden gem enhances the enchantment of the cherry blossoms, providing a blissful escape.

CHIANG MAI

Nestled in the embrace of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai province unfolds its annual spectacle of cherry blossoms during the winter months, enticing travellers into a realm of natural beauty and cultural richness. The journey commences in the picturesque hills of Khun Chang Khian, where cherry blossoms burst into bloom, carpeting the landscape in delicate shades of pink and white.

The air carries the sweet fragrance of the flowers, enveloping visitors as they traverse meandering paths, captivated by the ephemeral beauty of the blossoms. Venturing deeper into the northern highlands, Ang Khang unveils its enchanting display. The Royal Agricultural Station, surrounded by terraced gardens, transforms into a canvas painted with the vibrant hues of cherry blossoms. Amidst the blossoms, locals partake in traditional activities, weaving a cultural tapestry that enhances the natural splendour.

The poetic journey takes a compelling turn in Mae Wang, where cherry blossoms frame landscapes along the banks of the Mae Wang River, creating an ethereal spectacle that beckons exploration.

NAN

In the serene landscapes of Nan province, a hidden gem emerges from January to February, captivating travellers with its mesmerizing cherry blossom display. The journey into this floral wonderland begins in Khun Sathan National Park in Nanoi District. There, in a valley surrounded by lush mountains, the park becomes a haven for cherry blossom enthusiasts. As the first rays of sunlight pierce through the foliage, the cherry blossoms in Khun Sathan awaken, casting a soft glow on the landscape. Visitors stroll through the pathways, enveloped in the sweet fragrance of cherry blossoms.

MAE HONG SON

Nestled in the mountainous embrace of Mae Hong Son province, an expedition to Ban Rak Thai unveils a captivating cherry blossom experience at the Leewinerukthai Resort. As January unfolds, the landscape transforms into a canvas painted in delicate shades of pink and white. The resort, featuring lovely cottages perched on the hills overlooking the serene Ban Rak Thai village, offers a comfortable haven for those eager to witness the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossoms adorn the resort grounds, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a surreal atmosphere as sunlight filters through the blooming branches. Venturing beyond the resort, the village of Ban Rak Thai provides a unique cultural backdrop to the cherry blossom spectacle. Home to a community of Chinese descendants, the village’s traditional architecture and tea plantations create a picturesque setting.

PHITSANULOK

Part of Phu Hin Long Kla National Park, Phu Lom Lo once featured a sea of rolling hills of grassland without a single tree. The park rangers put more than 300,000 seedlings of Wild Himalayan cherry in the soil in 2009, hoping to make a difference.

Three years later, the Wild Himalayan Cherry cast its spell on Phu Lom Lo, transforming the treeless mountain valley into ethereal realms of enchantment. Today, Phu Lom Lo draws campers, nature lovers, and huge fans of cherry blossoms for the magical beauty of blooms in soft pink and pristine white.
