Three treasure hunters nabbed with over 1,000 antiques

Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers have arrested three treasure hunters and seized over 1,000 antique items, some of which are thought to be over 1,600 years old.

Four metal detectors, which were used by the gang to look for artefacts buried underground at archaeological sites, have also been seized.

Many of the confiscated antiques were displayed to the media during a press conference held at the CIB headquarters Monday morning.

Phanombut Chantarachot, director-general of the Fine Arts Department, told the media that officials had discovered that many artefacts were recently being offered for sale on social media and the police were asked to investigate.

He said that the artefacts have historical value, but they were offered for sale online at low prices, citing the case of a bronze figurine, shaped like a cow, which is thought to be about 1,600 years old.

The seized items include ancient pottery, coins, seals and decorative items, reflecting the ancient trade route from southern China through Southeast Asia and India.

CIB Commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Jirabhop Phuridet said the three treasure hunters travelled to archaeological sites in several northern provinces and Ratchaburi to search for buried artefacts.

The items offered for sale online were mostly snapped up by a gang of antique buyers for resale to collectors.
