Thermal camera captures red hot images of Seoul

Seoul landmarks appeared red hot on a thermal camera on Thursday (August 3) as parts of the country roast in temperatures over 38 degrees Celsius this week.

The thermal camera footage showed how hot or cold the objects are in its screen with colours – the redder the colour, the hotter it is.

A 78-year-old South Korean resident looked at the thermal camera footage and said “Although the red colour looks passionate, it seems like red colour can cause burns to people as well. So I felt that we can get burned not only from fire but also through sunlight like today.”

A 12-year-old student told the media that when she saw other thermal imaging cameras on hot days (installed in other places), it usually showed orange colours. But seeing red colors everywhere on the thermal imaging camera, she can feel that the temperature is really high.

South Korea raised the heat warning level in its four-tier system to the highest as of 6 p.m. on Tuesday (August 1), the first time since 2019.

Nationwide, at least 16 people have died because of the heat so far this year.
