The ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) in Thailand visited Ban Nong Ya Kaew village in Sa Kaeo province today, to investigate an incident in which Cambodian troops opened fire at a Thai military bunker on Wednesday.
Several bullet holes were found in the bunker and a tree in front of it.
Brig Gen Samsul Rizal Bin Musa, head of the observer team, told the media at the scene that the bullet marks on the tree and bunker appear to be fresh, but it cannot yet be ascertained what type of bullets caused the marks, until they are examined by Thai forensic science officers.
He said his team has, however, already received an initial report from the Thai Army, after which a report will be submitted to the Malaysian Defence Ministry for consideration in accordance with the ASEAN security mechanism.
He also declined to say whether the gunfire from Cambodian troops was intended to kill or maim Thai soldiers, but that the military will undertake its own investigation.
Cambodia has accused Thai troops of opening fire on Cambodian civilians, killing one and injuring three others.
