Thai private sector expects new government to be in place by September

The Thai private sector is ready to work with the new government, but it does not expect the administration to be in place until August or September, according to Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade.

He said that, at this stage, it remains unclear what the government will look like adding, however, that what is clear now is that a prime ministerial candidate cannot be renominated, which means that Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat is out of the picture.

The next step is for the Move Forward party to step aside and let the party with the second most seats in the House, Pheu Thai, try to form the government. It remains to be seen whether the Pheu Thai party’s prime ministerial candidate will receive support from the required 375 members of the House and Senate, said Sanan.

Alternatively, Pheu Thai may break away from the coalition of eight parties to form a government with other parties, he said, adding that the Pheu Thai party has a strong and experienced economic team, which proved its worth when the party led a previous government several years ago.

Meanwhile, Boonchoo Saisakpong, CEO of Trang Seafood Products, said that he would like a government to be formed as quickly as possible, so that the private sector will get an idea of the direction of its economic development plans.
