Taxi drivers protest against Pheu Thai-Bhumjaithai coalition

Several groups of taxi drivers gathered in front of Pheu Thai headquarters today (Tuesday), to express their disagreement over the Pheu Thai-Bhumjaithai bid to form a government.

Their leader, Worapon Kamkhuntod, told reporters that theywant to declare that they will no longer support Pheu Thai, because it is cooperating with a political party that has been ina government led by a coup leader.

On Monday, Pheu Thai held a joint press conference with Bhumjaithai, declaring that they would be core in forming the government. Bhumjaithai, led by Anutin Charnvirakul, is a coalition party in the outgoing government led by Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, who carried out the last coup in the country.

“We came here not to object Pheu Thai’s formation of a new government. We just want to express that we will no longersupport the Pheu Thai party. Before, we fought together with the red shirt people and Pheu Thai against Bhumjaithai but,today, Pheu Thai is shaking hands with Bhumjaithai. We cannot not accept it,” he said.

They also burned red shirts and Pheu Thai membership cards, to show that they are leaving the Pheu Thai party.

Their gathering was held under tight security, after the raid on Monday at Pheu Thai headquarters by the Taluwang political group.
