Summer sunflower maze opens to the public in Japan

A maze created in a field with about 50,000 sunflowers in northern Japan’s Yamagata Prefecture has opened to the public. Local people use an idle field in Tendo City to make the labyrinth every summer.

About 50,000 sunflowers have grown as tall as two meters high. The field is around 5,000 square meters in size. The path is roughly 500 meters long.

An opening ceremony was held at the site on Monday. Among those present were 50 sixth graders from Hoshinuno Elementary School, which is located in the city, and its sister school, Yotsuya Elementary School, which is located in Tokyo.

The children made their way through the maze. The flowers towered over them. A sixth grader from Yotsuya Elementary School said it was the first time that he had ever seen so many sunflowers. He added that he enjoyed exploring the maze.

The sunflowers are expected to be in peak bloom at the end of July. The maze is free of charge and will be open until early August.
