The two sacred oxen, “Por” and “Piang”, chose to eat grass and drink water and liquor at the Royal Ploughing Ceremony today, predicting sufficient water, good rice crops and plentiful of food and fruit, economic prosperity, improved exports and communications this year.

Plates of food, including rice, corn, green beans, sesame, grass, liquor and water were offered to the oxen.

Meanwhile, the Lord of the Ceremony, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Prayoon Insakul, picked the five “kueb” (125cm) cloth, from a choice of three lengths, which also indicates sufficient water and plentiful of rice, food and fruit.

The ceremony, held at Sanam Luang, was presided over by HM the King. It marks the beginning of the rice growing season in Thailand.
