The detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED), hidden in a motorcycle sidecar parked against the wall of a defence volunteer office in Waeng district of the southern province of Narathiwat province, injured three volunteers and four civilians on Friday night.
Quoting eyewitnesses, police say that the two men riding the motorcycle and sidecar parked the vehicle next to the concrete wall and quickly left on a second motorcycle. About five minutes later, the sidecar exploded, causing extensive damage to the wall. Several other motorcycles parked nearby were also damaged.
Police say that the IED was detonated remotely.
The defence volunteer office is located about 300 metres from the district office and about 700 metres from the district police station.
After the incident, police sealed off the area around the site of the explosion and an explosive ordnance disposal unit combed the area for more IEDs.
This afternoon, a police officer was injured when a pipe bomb was thrown into a police outpost next to a child care centre in Janae district of Narathiwat. The wounded officer, identified as Pol Cpl Kiatisak Sonkhao, was alone in the outpost.
No one in the child care centre was injured.
