Southern insurgents launched gun and explosive attacks in Muang and Waeng districts of Narathiwat province last night, injuring eight people.
The first attack was reported at 6.50pm in Muang district, when explosives in a motorcycle sidecar, parked against a wall behind the Khok Kian police apartments, detonated. Three passers-by were injured, one of them seriously.
Police say that seven young people, including a seven-year-old boy, were walking towards the Ban Thorn market as the explosion occurred. All three of those injured, including the boy, were rushed to the provincial hospital.
In the second attack, an unknown number of insurgents opened fire with assault rifles on a group of Thai men, who were eating together in front of a house in Village 7 in Waeng sub-district, at about 7pm.
Five of the men, all of whom are Buddhists, were injured.
