Convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was transferred from Bangkok Remand Prison to Klong Prem Central Prison today, to begin his one-year sentence after the Supreme Court ruled by 5:0 votes that its one-year sentence has not been enforced by the Corrections Department.
Thaksin was seen by the media, wearing a light blue prison uniform in a Corrections Department van, leaving the Bangkok Remand Prison for Klong Prem Central maximum security prison at about 5.10pm.
It is reported that he was the only prisoner in the van. He was seen raising his thumb when some reporters shouted, asking where he was going and if he had any message to be conveyed to the Thai people.
According to prison procedures, Thaksin was required to undergo a medical checkup, be photographed and have his two thumbs scanned for his prison record and the issuance of a prisoner’s ID card.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that Thaksin will not be granted any privileges while in prison and that he will be treated according to the law, without any interference from the government.
