New Pheu Thai leader Julapun Amornvivat said that transforming the party is not merely an option, but a necessity.
“People outside the party say the Pheu Thai Party needs change. Restructuring the party now is not a choice, it’s essential. As a political party, we’ve experienced both success and pain. We must learn, adapt and move forward,” he said.
He added that the party carries the hopes and trust of the people, which drive it to deliver policies that benefit citizens.
Julapun, 50, has been elected the new party leader, receiving 354 out of 369 votes at the party’s general assembly today.
He replaces Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who recently stepped down to pave the way for a major party overhaul, aimed at restoring public confidence and boosting its popularity ahead of the upcoming general election, tentatively scheduled for March 29, 2026.
Julapun outlined his immediate priorities, emphasising faster communication with the public, selecting quality candidates who truly represent citizens’ needs and crafting policies that address real issues.
He acknowledged that these tasks will not be easy, but expressed confidence that, with the support of party members and “tens of millions of people,” Pheu Thai will triumph in the next general election and return to lead the government.
Expressing gratitude for the trust placed in him, Julapun called his appointment “the greatest honour” of his political career.
Reflecting on his long journey with the party, which spans over 25 years since the days of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai, Julapun acknowledged the challenges faced along the way.
“It has not been a road lined with roses,” he said, noting that the party had endured multiple coups and the removal of several prime ministers, yet continues to survive and fight.
“Today marks another step by passing the torch, from Thai Rak Thai’s early days of faith and hope that good policies could improve people’s lives to the Pheu Thai of today. That spirit remains alive in every member of our leadership. Our heart is always with the people,” he added.
