Thailand’s former Deputy Prime Minister Plodprasob Suraswadi and former Interior Minister Yongyuth Vichaidith have been released from the Corrections Department’s hospital after they met the conditions for the suspension of their imprisonment.
The two men are, however, required to wear electronic monitoring tags for the rest of their jail terms.
In March this year, the Supreme Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases sent Mr. Plodprasob to prison for one year and eight months, after finding him guilty of malfeasance in office for the unfair transfer of a senior official while he served as the Permanent Secretary of natural resources and the environment.
Mr. Yongyuth was imprisoned for two years, by the order of the Appeals Court in February this year, after he was found guilty of abusing his authority to help the Alpine Company to acquire a huge plot of land in Pathum Thani province, supposedly donated to a temple, but was turned into a golf course.
Mr. Plodprasob and Mr. Yongyuth are among about 3,000 prisoners who have had the remainder of their prison terms suspended and who have been released on a Royal pardon. Both have spent six and eight months in prison respectively.
