Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he has expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for Thai authorities’ assistance for Malaysians stranded by floods in southern Thailand.
“This prompt and thoughtful action reflects the enduring strength of our bilateral relations and the spirit of solidarity that we deeply value,” he said in a Facebook post.
He said Malaysia and Thailand will continue to work closely together to safeguard the safety, welfare, and well-being of the peoples of the two countries.
Thousands of Malaysian visitors were stranded in hotels in Hat Yai after the city was hit by flash floods over the weekend. Most have been evacuated to safety by Thai and Malaysian rescue teams.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan said there are around 500 Malaysians remained stranded. He said they include lecturers and students from Universiti Utara Malaysia still trapped in a hotel located in a severely flooded area.
Prime Minister Anwar said in another Facebook post that over 6,000 Malaysians have safely arrived back from southern Thailand.
He said the rescue mission was carried out by 20 Malaysian volunteer bodies in addition to the help of the Thai Government.
“I am deeply touched to see the bravery and persistence of our volunteer team who are willing to go through floods and face risks to save our fellow Malaysians. My highest appreciation and salute to our heroes,” he said.
