Mother of teacher killed in Khlong Toei shooting urges quick arrest of gunman

The mother of the female teacher shot and killed yesterday, near her school in Bangkok’s Khlong Toei area, is urging the police to arrest the gunman as quickly as possible.

70-year-old Manee Sinprasert said her daughter, Sirada, 47, was a teacher at the Sacred Heart Convent School in Khong Toei. She was hit by a stray bullet fired by the gunman, thought to be a vocational student.

The gunman reportedly dismounted from a motorcycle and opened fire on a group of Rajamangala University of Technology students near the school yesterday. One bullet hit Sirada and she died at the scene. One of the vocational students was seriously wounded.

Manee said that her daughter was planning to get married next year to her boyfriend of five years.

She said that her daughter called her every evening and they would normally talk for about half an hour, but yesterday she didn’t call. She did not suspect any foul play initially, although she did receive calls from a relative who used to teach at the same school.

She added that the relative called again later to tell her about her daughter being shot.

Pol Col Witthawat Chinkham, acting commander of the 5th division of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said they have questioned seven witnesses, who are classmates of the injured student, adding that they said they are first-year students and have never been involved dangerous rivalry with other students.

He admitted that police need some time to collect more information, before seeking a warrant for the arrests of the suspects.
