Japanese car maker, Mazda, has agreed to increase its investment in Thailand by about five billion baht to produce mild hybrid SUVs (MHEV) and to increase the efficiency of the supply chain.

The promise was conveyed to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by visiting chairman and CEO of Mazda Motors Corporation, Moro Mashiro, during a courtesy call at Government House, according to government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap.

He said that the prime minister assured the Mazda CEO of her government’s determination to move from petrol-fuelled to electric vehicles and to promote Thailand as a global production hub for EVs, while promoting clean energy.

The Thai government has also cut import taxes on EVs, to encourage people to switch to them and reduce exhaust emissions.

Mazda has been in Thailand for more than 70 years and is the third largest name in the passenger car segment, after Toyota and Honda.
