Dead Bryde’s whale towed ashore in Cha-am district for examination

The remains of a Bryde’s whale was towed by trawler to Cham-am beach, near a fishing pier in Phetchaburi province today (Thursday), after it was found floating at sea, about five kilometres from the shore.

The whale, which is estimated to weigh about ten tonnes and is 13 metres long, is believed to have died more than 10 days ago and is in a state of decomposition.

The remains were subsequently towed to the Rama VI barracks in Cha-am district, to be examined by veterinarians from the marine and coastal resources research centre to determine the exact cause of its death.

Chokchai Atikapalee, head of the research centre, has appealed to all fishermen to contact the centre on 1362 if they come across a rare marine species which appears to be sick, injured or dead, so officials can recover the animal for examination.
