A middle-aged man, with a history of mental illness, went on a rampage, firing shots into the air from his rifle and at police, while engaging in a stand-off with officers for several hours, before he was shot and subdued.
The incident began in Mae Sot district of Tak province at about 2am and lasted until 8.35am.
Police report that the man, who used to be a member of a gun club, drove his pickup truck to a petrol station. He got out of the car, carrying his rifle, and started shooting into the air as he walked along the roads in the district, causing panic among people in the town.
Alerted to the incident, police rushed to the petrol station and tried to talk him into surrendering his firearm, only to be shot at. Some of the bullets struck a police car, forcing the police to return fire.
The man then fled towards the Mae Sot-Mae Pa road and hid in the compound of a food shop, with the police in pursuit.
At about 8.35am, police finally managed to arrest him, after he had been shot and wounded.
