Just a leisurely two-hour drive south of bustling Bangkok lies a hidden gem offering respite from urban chaos. Baan Tham Suea, or Tiger Cave Village, is the perfect haven for those seeking to escape the city’s gridlocks and enjoy rewilded green spaces, the rustic beauty of Thailand’s countryside, the scenic Phetchaburi River, a vibrant weekend farmer’s market, and a plethora of activities.

Nestled at the edge of Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi Province, the tranquil Ban Tham Suea village has undergone a profound metamorphosis. It transitioned from traditional slash-and-burn farming practices, coupled with hunting during non-farming periods, to a community dedicated to preserving its lush surroundings. After decades marked by the cutting and burning of trees, the villagers initiated a groundbreaking “tree bank” project, symbolizing their commitment to reclaim and expand their community forest.

The “tree bank” initiative not only rejuvenated the forest but also provided a sustainable source of livelihood for the community. Today, Ban Tham Suea has emerged as a captivating weekend destination and rural retreat, beckoning travellers with a unique blend of rich history and harmonious coexistence between nature and people.

The entrance to Baan Tham Suea is marked by a grand rain tree standing proudly by the Phetchaburi River. Set up your tent on the community camping ground, where the river adds a soothing soundtrack to your stay. This riverside haven, hidden among the trees with the stream in Kaeng Krachan flowing past, has evolved into an organic farming and sufficiency economy learning site. If you prefer a more comfortable stay, the village now offers homestay accommodation, providing visitors with an immersive experience of local life.

To enrich the visitor experience, Baan Tham Suea offers unique activities such as making coconut crepes, crafting salted eggs, and creating seed bombs for the forest. Inflatable boat rafting along the serene Phetchaburi River is also on the menu.

Creating seed bombs is not only a fun but also a stylish way to get your hands dirty. Start by taking a small amount of clay and shaping it into a circular form. Add a pinch or two of potting soil but be cautious not to use too much, as it could make closing the ball challenging. Next, incorporate the seeds into the mixture. After adding the soil and seeds, gently lift the sides of the clay circle and press the ends together to seal it. If there are any small holes, cover them by applying a bit of clay.

Don’t worry if your seed bombs look a bit messy or aren’t perfectly round – they don’t need to be. The seed balls should be left to air dry. Once dry, these seed bombs can be launched using a slingshot into the forest, where they will spring to life during the rainy season. This simple, albeit not perfect, method offers an easy and enjoyable way to learn about gardening and reforestation. Kids, especially, will love the moulding and shooting aspects of this eco-friendly activity.

In addition to its picturesque landscapes and eco-conscious initiatives, the village hosts a farmer’s market on weekends, providing an opportunity for visitors to connect with local farmers and artisans. This vibrant market offers a diverse range of fresh produce, handmade crafts, and local delicacies, further emphasizing the community’s dedication to supporting local economies.

Baan Tham Suea’s allure extends beyond its rural retreat and scenic river. The village has embraced its role as an eco-friendly haven for travellers and a knowledge hub for organic agriculture enthusiasts. The community’s commitment to environmental conservation is evident in its strategic use of forest resources for carbon sequestration, contributing significantly to the journey towards a Net Zero society. This transformative development emphasizes the critical importance of environmental awareness for both public and private entities, advocating for sustainable practices across economic, social, and environmental domains.

Engage with locals, who are not just inhabitants but stewards of the land, eager to share their stories of transformation.
