Phuket authorities have mobilised emergency teams to assist residents and clear roads after flash floods and mudslides hit Patong early Monday morning, with continued heavy rain raising concerns about further flooding.
Mud and debris flowed down from nearby hills onto roads, particularly Soi Nanai 5 and Soi Nanai 8 in Patong, Kathu district, blocking traffic.
Officials deployed excavators and other heavy machinery to remove mud and clear drainage channels.
Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and his deputies, along with the Patong mayor, provincial disaster prevention and mitigation officials and representatives of other agencies, visited the affected areas.
Emergency teams have also been assigned to help residents move their belongings to safer locations, clear mud and debris, and wash affected roads and surrounding areas to reduce safety hazards.
An assistance centre has been established, along with three temporary shelters for people affected by the flooding and mudslides. Residents requiring emergency assistance can contact Patong Municipality’s Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Division at 076-342-600 around the clock.
The Phuket Red Cross Society and the Provincial Interior Ministry’s Housewives Club have also prepared 300 meal sets for emergency personnel and residents affected by the flooding and mudslides.
Meanwhile, Phuket Provincial Police Chief Surachai Suksai has ordered officers to support relief operations in Patong, particularly in Soi Nanai 5 and Soi Nanai 7.
Some residents and business operators began cleaning their homes, shops and surrounding areas on Monday morning, using hoses to wash away mud and debris in an effort to resume normal activities as quickly as possible.
Provincial authorities and relevant agencies said they would continue providing assistance, monitoring conditions and restoring affected areas, while prioritising the safety of residents and emergency workers.
