The Thai government will push for the implementation of a five-year secured border housing project next year for communities in Sa Kaeo, Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Buri Ram and Si Sa Ket border provinces, to address housing shortages, reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for border villagers.

Capt Patdarasm Thongsaluaykorn, deputy government spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office of Thailand, told the media today that the ministries of defence and social development had drawn up the project.

The Ministry of Defence will allocate the land, while the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) will work with the Community Organizations Development Institute (CODI), which is a public company, to map out its project implementation, development of infrastructure for 752 communities in 26 border provinces within five years.

She said that the government will work with the War Veterans Organization of Thailand to help families of war veterans and poor para-military rangers and their families so they have their own housing and skills training.

The two ministries will form a joint committee to draw up the project details and calculate the budget needed for implementation for Cabinet approval.
