In Thailand’s western province of Kanchanaburi, bordering Myanmar, Governor Jirakiart Phumisawat, on Tuesday, ordered the closure of the border checkpoint at the Three Pagoda Pass, in Sangkhla Buri district, to all travel and movement of goods, including the movement of sick people from Myanmar onto Thai soil.
The border closure is a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19 into Thailand from Myanmar, which is experiencing a second wave of infections, especially in the Rakhine state bordering Bangladesh.
Violation of the border shutdown order is subject to two years imprisonment and/or a fine of not exceeding 40,000 baht.
