New COVID-19 infections in Thailand continued to fall today to 27, from yesterday’s 32, as the total number of fatalities remains at 47 for three days in a row.
The country’s accumulated infections stand at 2,792 and recoveries have increased to 1,999, with 746 still in hospital.
CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said today the new infections, caused by close contact with infected people in the past week, has fallen to 32, from 121 a week ago, and there were fewer new infections among medical professionals.
He pointed out, however, that there is a disturbing trend of increased new infections in people visiting crowded places, such as markets and shops.
Of the new cases reported today, 16 have a record of close contact with infected people, two visited crowded venues, one is in state quarantine and eight others are under further investigation.
Bangkok still ranks top, with 1,440 accumulated infections, followed by Phuket’s 190 and Nonthaburi’s 151. 35 provinces have reported no new infections for the past 14 days, with Saraburi and Ubon Ratchathani being added to that list.
Quoting a report by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Taweesin said about 8,900 Thais in 14 countries have registered with Thai missions abroad to return to Thailand in May.
Thailand is placed 54th in the global ranking of total infections. In Asia, Japan reported 501 new infections today, pushing the country’s total to 10,797. Singapore reported 595 new cases, bringing the island state’s total to 6,588, while Indonesia reported 327 new cases, bringing the total to 6,575.
