Thailand recorded one new COVID-19 case today (Wednesday), bringing the cumulative cases in the country, since the outbreak began, to 3,084, with no new fatalities.
CCSA assistant spokesperson Dr. Panprapha Yongtrakul said today that the new case is a 26-year old Thai student who arrived from Saudi Arabia via Malaysia on May 25th and entered state quarantine in the southern border province of Pattani.
An initial test showed a negative result, but the second, conducted on May 31st, was positive for COVID-19, though the student was asymptomatic.
Since February, Dr. Panprapha said that infections among those returning from abroad have reached 147, including the latest case. Of these, 65 of them returned from a pilgrimage to Indonesia, she said.
Local, or community infections have not been recorded in Thailand for nine consecutive days.
Total recoveries, to date, stand at 2,968 and the death toll remains at 58.
Worldwide, the CCSA assistant spokesperson took note of the situation in India, where 204 new cases were recorded yesterday, sending India’s cumulative total to 207,191, with 5,829 fatalities.
She said India, which is 7th in the world for the number of infections, started a fifth phase of lockdown measures on May 31st.
In the UK, the teachers’ union has expressed concern over the possibility of COVID-19 outbreaks in schools, after their reopening on June 1st, despite the enforcement of social distancing with class numbers capped at 15.
Some British experts, said Dr. Panprapha, have warned that the easing of lockdown restrictions in the country was premature, as new infections are steadily on the rise.
In Congo, she disclosed that Ebola has resurfaced, with six people infected and four fatalities, adding that the mortality rate for the disease ranges from 25%-90%.
In Thailand’s southern province of Songkhla, the provincial communicable diseases committee has extended the closure of several beaches, in Muang, Singha Nakorn, Kuan Niang and Bang Klam districts, until the end of June.
The beaches in Muang and Singha Nakorn, which includes Samila, Chalatas, Laemson-on, Muang Ngam and Chuladit, remain closed from 6pm until 5am, while those in the two other districts are closed around the clock.
Cumulative infections in Songkhla, to date, are 132, with 44 of them returnees from Indonesia, four from Saudi Arabia and 65 illegal immigrants in isolation at the immigration detention centre in Sadao district.
