One new COVID-19 was recorded in Thailand today, among Thais who have returned from abroad and are in 14 day state mandated quarantine. There have been no new fatalities.
CCSA assistant spokesperson Dr. Panprapha Yongtrakul said that the new patient is a 24-year male Thai student, in state quarantine in the eastern province of Chon Buri, who arrived from Egypt on June 9th.
Two other passengers on the same flight, both asymptomatic, had also tested positive. The student tested negative on June 13th, but was found to be infected in a second test on June 23rd, although he also remains asymptomatic.
Thailand’s total infections to date are 3,158, with 3,039 recoveries and 58 deaths. Of all the country’s infections, 2,444 were locally acquired and there are still 221 people in state quarantine.
Dr. Panprapha said that Thailand has now been without a local transmission of COVID-19 for 31 consecutive days.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was scheduled to meet this afternoon (Thursday) with the CCSA subcommittee, at the office of the National Security Council, to consider whether to extend the emergency decree, which is due to expire at the end of this month.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngarm said that it was likely that the decree would not be extended, because the Cabinet did not discuss the issue at its meeting on Tuesday.
Pro-democracy activist groups and the opposition parties have been urging the Government to scrap the emergency decree, claiming that it is no longer necessary, as the COVID-19 situation is improving to such an extent that many lockdown restrictions have been eased.
