Nine more COVID-19 cases, who are Thai returnees to Mae Sai district of Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai from Myanmar’s Thachilek Township, were recorded today among 17 new cases from abroad.
Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Disease Control Department, told a news conference today (Sunday) that infections linked to Thachilek have increased to 58, including two locally-transmitted cases.
All nine new cases from Thachilek are women, aged 19 to 35,who used to work in entertainment venues in the Myanmar border town.
Dr. Opas also dismissed a report that one of the attendees at the Big Mountain concert festival in Khao Yai, Nakhon Ratchasima province, is infected with the virus. He said that the woman, who came from Chiang Mai, suffered from breathing difficulties and is now being treated at Maharaj Hospital in the province.
According to the CCSA, the other eight cases from abroad include two each from the United States and Switzerland and one each from the UK, Japan, Bahrain and Pakistan.
Cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, are 4,209, with 3,923 recoveries, while the death toll remains 60.
Dr. Vicharn Pawan, a specialist at the Disease Control Department, assured that there is only a slim chance that infected medics would infect other people.
Six medics working at quarantine facilities have, so far, been found to be infected while their contacts have been traced, including 51 high risk and 888 low risk people.
