Thai police have sought cooperation from Interpol by expanding their investigation into a human egg harvesting ring in Georgia, the national police chief said today.
Police are currently interviewing three Thai women, who were recently rescued from the ring by the Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, to gather more details for a more thorough investigation, said Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet.
The foundation’s founder, Pavena Hongsakul, says that the rescue of the three women late last month was the result of cooperation between Interpol, Thai police and the foundation.
Information from the freed women indicates that around 100 more Thai women are still awaiting rescue.
They were tricked into travelling to Georgia, with the promise of high earnings as surrogate mothers.
They were, however, forced to donate ova on a monthly basis instead, which could harm their health. Furthermore, the harvested ova could be used for unethical purposes.
Accounts from the women reveal that the gang comprises both Thai and Chinese nationals, Kitrat said, adding that anti-human trafficking police have been assigned to trace the whereabouts of the Thai members.
