Thailand recorded one new COVID-19 case and no new fatalities today (Monday).
CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said that the new patient is 43-year old Thai woman, who arrived from Russia on May 20th and entered state quarantine in Chon Buri province the same day.
She tested negative for COVID-19 on May 24th, but a second test yesterday (Sunday) produced a positive result. She was then admitted to hospital, although she was asymptomatic at the time.
Dr. Taweesin said that every new infection in the past seven days involved people returning from overseas and who are currently in state quarantine.
He added, however, that the absence of local infections in the past week is not a cause for relief, noting that zero community acquired infections must continue for at least 2-3 weeks.
According to the CCSA, total death toll remains at 57. Cumulative infections in Thailand are 3,082 and 2,965 patients have recovered, with 60 still in hospital.
Classifying the country’s infections by occupation, freelancers account for 412 cases, entrepreneurs for 363, office based employee and factory workers for 272, students for 206 and 199 cases among workers in entertainment venues.
The latest update, from the southern border province of Narathiwat, said that one elderly patient, under treatment in Narathiwat Nakarin Hospital, died today, but the report had not reached Dr. Taweesin by the time of today’s briefing.
The victim was an 80-year old resident of Wang district, Narathiwat province, who recently returned from a pilgrimage to a mosque in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He suffered from pneumonia and tested positive for the virus.
Narathiwat has, so far, recorded two deaths related to coronavirus, including the latest victim.
Meanwhile, Narathiwat Provincial Governor has instructed officials in charge of a local quarantine facility, at a sports stadium in the province, to tighten discipline on 11 students, recently returned from Saudi Arabia, after it was found that they are regularly gathering for religious activities and discussions and ignoring social distancing guidelines.
In South Korea, Dr. Taweesin said, the Government has mandated that food shops, bars, nightclubs and in-door gyms are to require their customers to use a QR Code for tracking, starting on June 10th. Whereas, in Pakistan, the wearing face masks in public places is now required.
