A army rescue team dropped from a helicopter into a ravine near a waterfall in Khao Laem Dam National Park in Sangkhla Buri district of the western province of Kanchanaburi this morning is trying to find a way to bring a seriously injured out to safety.
A Thai PBS reporter at the scene reported that the rescue team had reached the injured tourist who suffered from multiple injuries after accidentally falling into the ravine from a mountain cliff but by Wednesday evening still could not bring him out.
The rescue team from the Kanchanaburi-based Surasee force planned to move the injured tourist, identified only as Mr Nipon, 46, in a stretcher by foot from the ravine to a helicopter landing zone about 2-3 walking hours away, said Colonel Saravuth Chaisith, commander of the 29th Infantry Regiment.
Nipon suffered a broken right leg and serious head injury from the accidental fall from the cliff near the Roi Wa or Pong Ping waterfall.
Rescue officials said they would try to bring Nipon out to safety by tonight.
