Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has emphasised his country’s commitment to achieving its Net Zero goals, while framing global energy challenges as a catalyst for national energy reform.
Yesterday, in his three-minute address during the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Plus Online Summit, hosted by Japan via video conference, Anutin acknowledged the energy hurdles currently facing member nations, but maintained a proactive stance for Thailand.
The virtual summit, presided over by Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, served as a high-level forum where regional leaders addressed the intensifying energy crisis and coordinated efforts toward decarbonisation.
Anutin stated that, rather than being deterred by global volatility, Thailand views the situation as an opportunity to fast-track its transition to sustainable power, adding, “We intend to achieve our Net Zero targets faster than originally planned.”
He also outlined a strategy to ensure a resilient and sustainable energy future, beginning with accelerated Net Zero targets.
Central to this vision are comprehensive structural energy reforms designed to overhaul domestic infrastructure for enhanced stability and security, while maintaining a steadfast focus on public welfare to ensure the green transition is implemented carefully, without placing an undue financial burden on citizens.
The prime minister further asserted that Thailand’s energy evolution would remain strictly aligned with United Nations (UN) sustainability charters.
By diversifying its energy portfolio and integrating new and alternative energy sources, the government aims to ensure a continuous and reliable power supply while drastically reducing carbon emissions, he said.
The AZEC Plus Online Summit remains a critical platform where Asian leaders can exchange expertise and forge partnerships.
