A 4.9 magnitude earthquake jolted the western province of Kanchanaburi on Sunday night, but no casualties or damages were reported.
The tremor was felt by people in Muang, Saiyoke, Si Sawat, Thong Pha Phum and Sangkhla Buri districts.
The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand said today that its dam safety remote monitoring system detected the quake at 10.39 pm with its epic centre in Si Sawat district, about 54 kilometres from the Srinakharin dam to the north.
The tremor was measured at 4.9 magnitude on the Richter scale and about two kilometres deep.
Wallop Mekprueksawong, director of EGAT’s maintenance section, said the earthquake did not affect the Srinakharin or the Vajiralongkorn dams in Kanchanaburi province and he advise residents and tourists not to panic.
Sangkhla Buri district chief officer Pakorn Kanwally said since the quake occurred late at night he had not yet received any report of damages or casualties. However, he added that he had instructed community leaders to inform their people about the natural incident so they would not become panic.
Apichart Pimlamat, a villager of Ban Ton Phoeng, Sangkhla Buri district, said he and his neighbours were having a barbeque on the front lawn next door and felt the vibrations with bottles and glass on the table shaking.
He said he was used to the tremors and did not panic.
