Health investigators have found the virus which causes COVID-19 on door handles at an alternative state quarantine facility and suspect that this could be the source of a cluster of infections among Thai medics working there, said CCSA spokesman Dr.Taweesin Wissanuyothin this morning (Wednesday).
He suggested that cleaners in all offices should not just clean the floors, but should also sanitize door handles for safety.
The CCSA today reported 15 new COVID-19 cases among arrivals from abroad in state quarantine, including three cases linked to Thachilek, which were reported yesterday in Chiang Rai province.
The remaining new infections include two each from the United Arab Emirates, the UK and India and one each from Hong Kong, Hungary, France, Bahrain, the US and Brazil.
Cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, are 4,261, with 3,977 recoveries and 224 others are still being treated in hospitals. The death toll remains 60.
Dr. Taweesin said that, since December 7th, there has not been a single case of locally-transmitted infection, linked to Thachilek,in Chiang Rai, Ratchaburi, Sing Buri, Chiang Mai or Bangkok.
If there are no new locally-transmitted cases within 14 days, he said that Thailand can be described as safe from COVID-19, except in the quarantine facilities.
Globally, cumulative infections, to date, are 73,803,320, an increase of 587,137 from yesterday. 51,813,957 have recovered and 1,641,440 have died.
Indonesia tops the list of most infections among ASEAN nations, with 629,429 cases and 19,111 fatalities.
