The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to cancel Chinese New Year’s celebrations, scheduled for February 12th in the capital’s Chinatown area, due to concerns over the continued spread of COVID-19 in the city.
As there is no sign of the infection rate slowing, Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang told the media today that holding Chinese New Year celebrations may put residents at risk and, therefore, it is appropriate for them to be cancelled this year.
Traditionally, City Hall, Chinese businesses and residents of Chinese descent jointly organize the celebrations, which feature various entertainment activities, a lion dance and food exhibitions. The highlight is the tour of Chinatown by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
802 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in Bangkok, with three additional cases today (Thursday).
According to the CCSA, Bang Khun Thian district has recorded the highest infection rate, with 151 cases, followed by 49 in Phasi Charoen district, 33 in Chom Thong district, 30 in Bang Khae district and 27 in Bang Phlad district.
