The Commerce Ministry is closely monitoring protests in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Albania and Belgium, warning that prolonged unrest could weaken consumer purchasing power, disrupt logistics networks and raise costs for Thai exporters.
Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun said today that she had instructed the Department of International Trade Promotion and Thai trade offices to assess potential risks to Thailand’s trade with Europe and its exports to the region, and to keep Thai exporters updated on developments.
The protests in the six European countries have been driven by concerns over the cost of living, wages and housing.
In the first eight months of this year, Thai exports to the EU were valued at US$212.06 billion, up 21.89% from the same period last year. Imports stood at US$13.63 billion, up 10.45% year on year.
The ministry has advised Thai exporters to closely monitor developments in Europe and explore alternative markets, including ASEAN, South Asia and the Middle East, to reduce their dependence on European markets amid uncertainty. It also urged exporters to adjust shipping routes where necessary.
