Bangkok Deputy Governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul has resigned, effective today (Monday), to prepare to run in the forthcoming Bangkok gubernatorial election as an independent candidate, tentatively scheduled for May.
The Bangkok governor election in May will be the first in nine years, as M.R. Sukhumbhand Paribatra, from the Democrat Party, who won his second term in 2013, was removed from his position following the May 2014 coup, and was succeeded by current Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang who was appointed in October 2016.
Sakoltee said in his Facebook post today (Monday) that he submitted his resignation letter to Governor Aswin Kwanmuang today. He said he will announce his team and his future plans for Bangkok soon.
Noting that several new things have happened to Bangkok, Sakoltee said there are still many things that should be done to make Bangkok better, especially people’s quality of life and the city’s environment.
Sakoltee will join a host of well-known candidates who have already announced their candidacies. Among them are former Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt, who will be running as an independent, the Democrat party’s candidate Dr. Suchatvee Suwansawat, former rector of King Mongkul Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Move Forward MP Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn and former senator Rosana Tositrakul.
The date of the Bangkok governor and city councillor elections, and the Pattaya City major and councillor elections, is expected to be set in late March.
