Two Thai workers were killed in South Korea when their passenger carrying 16 people of various nationalities skidded off a mountain road en route to a farm, the Korean Times reported on Monday.
Initial reports indicate that the two Thais, whose identities have not yet been released, the van driver and another passenger of unknown nationality were seriously injured after the van crashed through a guard rail. Nine other people in the vehicle were also injured.
All the dead and injured were rushed to the hospital and two of them were identified as Thai nationals.
The Korean Times quoted the police as saying that the van driver might have lost control of his vehicle, as it was on a steep hill, after having been behind the wheel for more than five hours.
It was also reported that three other migrant workers fled after the accident, probably because they have visa problem and were afraid they might be caught by the police.
Thai Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Ms. Bussadee Santipitak told Thai PBS today (Tuesday) that the two Thai workers died at the hospital and their families have been notified of the incident by ministry officials.
She said the ministry was coordinating arrangements for the victims’ remains to be repatriated.
