Many areas of Phuket, including the old commercial centre and some beach roads, are flooded this morning (Sunday), following heavy downpours throughout last night.

The Klang Road in the old commercial area, which includes the clock tower, Thao Thep Kasattri and the Thao Si Sunthon Monument, is under up to a metre of water this morning, making it impassable to small vehicles.

The Patong beach road is also flooded by rain water. In the Kamala beach area, flash floods, caused by runoff from the mountain, have left the road submerged, forcing to abandontheir vehicles on roadsides.

Meanwhile, the Thai Meteorological Department warned of continuing rain in the southern region, as well as heavy rain in some areas today, due to an intensifying cold front from China, which has covered northern Vietnam and Laos and is expected to spread to the northern part of Thailand today.

Another tropical storm, Nesat, which was detected in thenorthern Philippines, is gaining strength as it moves into the South China Sea today, heading towards the southern region of China’s Hainan Island, said the Weatherman.

On Friday, tropical storm Son Ca hit Quang Ngai province in Vietnam and has subsequently weakened to a tropical depression and a low pressure cell as it moved over Laos.

The storm is expected to hit Vietnam either Wednesday or Thursday, before it weakens to a tropical depression.

The mercury in all parts of Thailand has dropped today, with minimum temperatures from 21 to 23oC in the northern region, 19-21oC in the north-eastern region, 20-22oC in the central region, 20-22oC in eastern provinces, 22-24oC on the east coast of the southern region, 23-24oC on the west coast of the southern region and 20-22oC in Bangkok and its peripherals.
