Watanya disassociates from new Democrat leadership but does not quit

Watanya Bunnag, who failed in her bid to take the helm of Democrat party last Saturday, because she was unqualified, said today that she is disassociating herself from the new executive board, but will not leave the party yet.

Apparently upset with the internal lobbying in support of the winning candidate, former secretary-general Chalermchai Srion, she said that she disagreed with such tactics, as it is unfair and casts doubt on the honesty of the new leadership under Chalermchai.

Watanya said that she does not want to quit the party yet, but would rather wait and see how the party performs, adding that she will leave the party if it decides to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition government.

Chalermchai and several MPs under his wing had earlier pledged support Watanya’s candidature, but changed their minds at the last minute to support Chalermchai.
