Myanmar’s local news media report that the Vice-Chairwoman of Myanmar’s Central Bank, Than Than Swe, was shot dead in her home earlier today (Thursday). She was alone when she opened the door to a stranger.

Locals in the area surrounding the Shwe Gon Yeik Mon compound, in the Bahan Township, say that she was shot as soon as she opened the door.

Than Than Swe was well known for refusing to live in accordance with the housing arrangements as prescribed by the government and has been living alone for over five years.

There are now rumours circulating on social media that it was one of the anti-junta underground groups who carried out the assassination.

After being tipped off by a witness, security personnel are now reportedly searching for a vehicle, which the assailant is thought to have used.

At the time of publication, there was yet to be any official announcement regarding this incident.
