There is little sign yet of a slow-down in international arrivals to Thailand, despite the spread of new coronavirus variant, Omicron, in several countries. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is confident its target of 500,000 overseas arrivals this year will be achieved.
TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said yesterday (Tuesday) that 93,573 foreign travellers entered Thailand between November 1st and 28th, adding that, although arrivals are still far short of the target, he expects more arrivals in December, noting that more than 300,000 foreign tourists have applied for the “Thailand Pass”.
He admitted that arrivals from some European countries are slowing, due to the resurgence of COVID-19 there.
President of the Thai Hotels Association (THA) Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi expressed concern that the spread of Omicron in some European countries may impact Thailand’s tourism sector, noting that Europe is a main tourism market for Thailand.
Although the initial impacts may be mild, she admitted that it is difficult to assess the situation going forward, adding that she does not want to see lockdowns being imposed in Thailand or in other countries again.
