Thailand’s Songkran festival recognized as Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed his delight as the Songkran Festival of Thailand was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

The official announcement was made during Unesco’s Intergovernmental Committee meeting for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Botswana.

The premier expressed gratitude to Unesco on behalf of the Thai government and people for recognizing the festival, which holds significance as Thailand’s traditional New Year.

The Songkran Festival is the fourth cultural heritage of Thailand to be listed, following Khon (masked dance drama) in 2018, Nuad Thai (traditional Thai massage) in 2019, and Nora (dance drama in southern Thailand) in 2021.
