Thailand’s COVID infections last week increased by 24 percent

COVID-19 infections continue to rise in Thailand. Last week there were 3,957 cases, averaging 565 cases a day, an increase of 24.97% on the previous week, according to the Disease Control Department today (Monday).

The death toll last week was 69, or an average of nearly 10per day. Of the new cases, 432 have lung infections and 252 are on ventilators.

Meanwhile, Dr. Thira Woratanarat of the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University said in his Facebook post, citing data from Ourworldindata, that new infections last week were clearly prevalent in high-income and middle-income economies in the Oceania, South America and Asia regions.

He said he had to assess the COVID-19 situation in Thailand from foreign-based data, because the Thai data system is not adequately updated. He attributed the increase in infections in Thailand to a combination of several causes, such as the more relaxed lifestyle, the lowering of guards against the disease, the mutations of the virus and a reduction in the immunity induced by vaccination.

He suggested that it is time for those who were inoculated over seven months ago to get another booster shot, to reduce the risk of serious symptoms or death from infection and Long COVID Syndrome.
